Dog Show

All dog shows, the entrants are closely examined to see if they conform to the breed qualifications set for the competition. These fun and exciting events are commonly organized by kennel clubs and breed clubs. Shows where only specific breeds are examined are known as specialty shows.

Judges of the show are totally responsible for setting the standards for the show. To choose dogs which match the set standards during the show is extremely difficult because the judgements made should be completely subjective. While comparing one dog with another, the dog is also compared to the judge’s image of an ideal dog which meet the breed standard almost perfectly. Selecting a winner dog which matches the breed standards is the objective of each dog show.

From the the long list of breed standards which contributes to the conformation point, all the judges work together to frame the conformation point. There are certain necessities that form the basis of competitions though conformation points can vary from one competition to another. Although the pet’s color, pattern, length, type and quality are observed, in the final analysis the fur is still the most important factor. The layout, the quality and how many markings there are also play an important part in the judges’ decision.

The other aspects also considered are a healthy skin with no pigmentation and the shape and color of the head. The general attitude and temperament are noted down for each breed of dogs. The judges will compare and take into consideration the mouth and structure of the teeth and how they align when the jaw is closed. The shape and color of the eyes and the shape and set of ears, including the ratio of the length and height are carefully taken into consideration. The style of walking and gait the shape of the tail and feet are closely observed - the dogs, which enter such competitions, should be well groomed. For purposes of easy identification the name of the participating dog and its breeder’s kennel name are registered.

Since every dog has a registered name and a call name, during the competition, the kennel club calls the dog by its registered name while the owner refers to it by its call name. Contenders from different parts of the country are attracted to participate in the many dog shows conducted at various levels: both local and national. Due to the hierarchical nature of the contest , dogs go through a series of elimination rounds before the finalists are ultimately judged to select a winner.

Gathering the dogs that have won competitions in other dog shows together in one competition can ensure that the judges will be able to select the best in the breed. Since the dog shows are known to select the best dog in the breed, the price of the puppies of champions fetch a surprisingly high price. Since people will always want to buy a pet that resembles a champion, the popularity of the breed increases rapidly. Out of the many dog shows taking place, Crufts in the UK and the Westminster Kennel Club Show in the United States are the two prestigious ones available.
